I thought this would be a good article to come back with. In talking with people I’ve met, discussing the jewelry I make, I’ve gotten the impression that they are “not impressed” with “plastic jewelry”. There “is” a difference between Plastic and Acrylic.
- Here is an article I found that discusses the differences quite well:
- As mentioned in the article, and what I find, is that Acrylic (beads) have a firmness to them, and a sheen that you do not find in “plastic”.
- Acrylic holds its sheen, its glammor, its beauty, better and longer than plastic.
- Plastic (generally) has more of a duller appearance. When it does have a shine to it, it is more like it was given a coating of shellac, rather than coming from the material.
- Acrylic has a better quality look to it, and it also can be extremely “clear” and see through. Take a look at the Blue Crystal Dangles necklace and earrings. It is a perfect example of a mixture of materials used to create it. You would not necessarily know it to look at it, but it does have acrylic, plastic, glass and metal used in it to create the beautiful look it has. (I would love to paste a picture of it here, but this seems to be text only.)
I prefer to use acrylic beads in my jewelry, for the very reasons listed above. However, the necklaces, earrings, and any other product I produce for sale through this website may have a combination of acrylic, plastic, glass, and metal as part of its creation — therefore the name, Acrylics and More. (And you may not be able to tell which is what or what is which.),
If you have any questions about what I show on this website, or something you would like to see, please let me know. I would be happy to discuss that with you.
